Kids in Sports? How to Create a Home That Keeps All That Equipment Organized

If you have kids in sports, you already know the equipment can seem to multiply overnight.

As a mom with two multi-sport athlete sons, I’ve experienced this firsthand. One day, you have a couple of soccer balls and a pair of cleats. Suddenly, there are baseball bats, football helmets, sports bags, uniforms, water bottles and enough dirty socks to fill an entire laundry room.

Sports are an amazing part of growing up, but keeping all the equipment organized can be a completely different story.

The good news? You don’t necessarily need a huge house to make it work. You just need to make the space you have work smarter.

Create a Dedicated “Sports Zone”

One of the easiest ways to keep sports equipment from taking over your house is to give it a designated home.

With two sons playing multiple sports, I quickly learned that sports gear cannot simply be left wherever it lands. Without a system, the garage, entryway and laundry room can become one giant pile of bags, shoes and equipment.

A sports zone could be a section of your garage, a mudroom, a laundry room, an entryway closet or even an organized corner of a bedroom.

The important thing is that everyone knows:

Sports equipment goes here.

Use labeled bins, baskets, hooks and shelving to create specific homes for different types of equipment. Consider giving each child their own bin or section so equipment doesn’t become one giant pile.

Make the Garage Work Harder

For many families, the garage becomes the unofficial sports-equipment headquarters.

In our house, the garage has had to serve as storage, a place to get ready for practices and, occasionally, the only realistic location for all the gear that comes home at the end of the day.

Instead of simply stacking everything along the walls, take advantage of vertical space.

Wall-mounted hooks can hold bags, helmets and jackets, while shelving can keep balls, shoes and smaller equipment off the floor. A pegboard can also be useful for hanging frequently used items.

The goal is simple: get equipment off the floor and give everything a place.

And don’t forget about the ceiling. Overhead storage can be a great solution for equipment that isn’t used every day or is only needed during a particular season.

Give Every Sport Its Own Space

If your kids participate in multiple sports, organizing by child isn’t always the easiest solution.

With two multi-sport athletes, I’ve found that organizing by sport can sometimes make more sense than organizing everything by person. Otherwise, one child’s baseball gear, football equipment and soccer items can quickly become mixed together with the other child’s gear.

Try organizing by sport instead.

Keep baseball bats, gloves and balls together. Put soccer equipment in one bin. Create a designated area for football gear. Seasonal equipment can be stored higher up or farther back when it’s not being used.

This makes getting ready for practice much easier — and hopefully reduces the frantic search for that one missing cleat five minutes before you need to leave.

Don’t Forget the Mudroom

A mudroom can be one of the most valuable spaces in a sports-loving household.

If you’re looking for a new home, pay attention to entry areas. A small mudroom with built-in cubbies, hooks and benches can make a huge difference.

Give every child a designated hook or cubby for:

• Sports bags

• Shoes and cleats

• Jackets

• Water bottles

• Hats

• Everyday backpacks

A bench also gives kids a place to sit while taking off muddy shoes before they make their way through the house.

With active kids, having a place to drop everything when they walk in the door can help keep sports equipment from spreading throughout the house.

Have a “Dirty Gear” System

Sports equipment doesn’t always come home clean.

Muddy cleats, sweaty uniforms and wet towels need somewhere to go besides the kitchen floor.

After years of dealing with sports laundry and gear, I’ve learned that a designated laundry basket or washable bin near the garage or laundry room is essential. It keeps dirty gear contained and makes it easier to see what needs to be washed before the next practice or game.

For especially messy sports, consider having a drying rack or waterproof mat nearby.

This is one of those small systems that can make a surprisingly big difference in keeping the rest of your home clean.

Think About Storage When Buying a Home

If your family is constantly surrounded by sports equipment, storage should be part of your home search — not an afterthought.

When touring homes, look beyond the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Ask yourself:

Where will all of our stuff go?

As someone who has lived through the reality of two children playing multiple sports, I know that storage can become just as important as the kitchen, backyard or number of bedrooms.

Look for:

• Large garages

• Walk-in closets

• Mudrooms

• Entryway storage

• Built-in shelving

• Large laundry rooms

• Bonus rooms

• Attics

• Outdoor storage

• Extra closets

• Flexible spaces that can grow with your family

A home that looks slightly smaller on paper may actually function better if it has smart storage.

Remember That Your Kids Will Grow — And So Will Their Equipment

One of the biggest mistakes families can make is organizing only for what they have today.

Kids’ sports change, and their equipment gets bigger.

The little soccer bag eventually becomes a giant football equipment bag. A small baseball collection can turn into multiple bats, helmets and bags. And suddenly, the equipment that once fit in a closet requires an entire wall.

I’ve watched this happen with my own sons. The gear they started with was manageable, but as they grew and became involved in more sports, the equipment grew right along with them.

When creating storage, think a few years ahead.

Choose adjustable shelving, flexible storage systems and spaces that can change as your kids’ activities change.

Create a Routine, Not Just a Storage System

Even the best storage system won’t work if nobody uses it.

Make putting equipment away part of the routine.

When kids come home from practice, bags go in their designated spot. Dirty clothes go into the laundry. Shoes go on the shoe rack. Equipment gets returned to its bin.

With two active boys, I’ve learned that this usually requires plenty of reminders. Okay, probably a LOT of reminders. But over time, having a consistent system makes it easier for everyone to know what needs to happen next.

The Bottom Line

Having kids in sports means having a lot of stuff. Having two multi-sport athletes means that stuff can multiply quickly. But you don’t have to let it take over your home.

Whether you’re working with a garage, mudroom, laundry room or simply a corner of the house, thoughtful organization can make your home feel much more functional.

And if you’re shopping for a new home, don’t just look at how beautiful the kitchen is or whether the backyard has a pool.

Think about how your family actually lives.

Because the right home isn’t necessarily the one with the most square footage.

It’s the one that gives your family the space to live the life you actually have.
